So Amsterdam Fashion Week has a brand new director, Danie Bles. For the ones who don’t know her yet, Danie has been working in fashion all her life. She started out as a stylist (of the stars), then built her own brand (collaborating with and hosting events and shows for big commercial brands such as L’Oréal) and she has had her own fashion label ByDanie for several years.

Given the fact that Danie is so familiar with setting up events and organising fashion shows it comes as no surprise that she would hold her own fashion show during her very first Amsterdam Fashion Week. And so on Friday morning we attended the show by her personal styling service Maison365 (a styling service sending you a box with three looks based on your personal style).

Fifty fall looks styled by Danie and her team entered the runway. Looks of different boutique brands that are linked to Maison365. “With Maison365 we want to show how we work when it comes to unique and complete personal styling. Plus we offer smaller, ambitious brand a chance to be part of a big event like Amsterdam Fashion Week”, Bles stated.

She and her styling team inspired us with a variety of fall looks in three different categories; Paris, upcoming Scandinavian talent and the Seventies. A casual start of leather pants and oversized sweaters. Looks styled off with loafers and berets for that extra Parisian feeling. More urban were the oversized coats and parkas styled off with fanny packs and hoodies. And we ended up in the party section of Maison365. With sparkling tops and pleated skirts, sequined shiny pants and luxurious looking velvet and jacquard suits given an extra glam touch by headbands and shiny earpieces.

The overall message was clear: from day to night, desk to dancefloor Maison365 has got you covered.

David Laport Amsterdam Fashion Week

We had to do without for a few seasons, but Amsterdam Fashion Week is back! Updated & improved Amsterdam Fashion Week (which already exists fourteen years) is now lead by Danie Bles. It has moved from het Westergasterrein to het Museumplein (to create more visibility in the city centre) and it now forms the kick off of fashion month (followed by New York, London, Milan and Paris) taking place in September (6 – 9 September) instead of June.

The show schedule exists of twelve fashion shows, which will be livestreamed online as well as projected on the outside of the fashion venue. Twelve shows of both commercial brands (like supermarket Lidl and warehouse Hudson’s Bay) and young design talents (like Ninamounah Langestraat and David Laport). The latter kicked off this fashion week.

Inspired by dance (he previously designed a collection for the Nationale Opera & Ballet) and photography David Laport (32) came up with his brand new collection. It includes flowerlike designs; a layered dress shaped like a sprouting rose, a poppy flower inspired design with endless colorshades changing with the light and the models movement.

To the sounds of piano music (there were eight piano’s placed in the show area), written by Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck, models appeared. They gracefully sported Laport’s pleated and feathered dresses which became even more beautiful with every step and every ray of light that hit the fabric. They appeared extraordinary in vivid shades like coral pink, yellow, baby blue and turquoise.

Solange Knowless wore on of David Laports designs to the Met Gala in 2016. And we can easily see these pieces end up at a red carpet big event upcoming year.

“I don’t want my show to be just a parade of pretty dresses, a collection should really tell a story. That’s the hardest part. I can easily design something hysteric, extravagant and over the top, but I don’t want it to be just about that”, David said in a recent interview. And a perfect, serene yet mesmerizing story was told. A beautiful start of this new & improved fashion week.

Trend Report FW2018: Eighties Leather Look

So we’re working a seventies palette, yet an eighties silhouette. Bold shoulders are back, as are the black leather jackets. The power woman silhouette came through strongly at Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant and Versace. Bare legs or a pair of skinny jeans and a bold jacket make up for the eighties look. But there’s more! Patent leather at MiuMiu, Haider Ackermann and Marc Jacobs proof you don’t have to wear color or metallic to wow your crowd. Black leather is your ultimate no brainer for fall. Oh and put on a matching hat for that extra style statement. Eighties redux with an ’18 touch.

Trend Report FW2018: Tweed

Tweed comes in every shape and size this time around. Classic, statement making, short ‘n sassy; any piece you need is out there in tweed. XL at Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein. Ladylike and old school at Altuzarra and Chanel. Youthfull and colourful at Miu Miu and Prada. No holding back this time. Wear tweeds on tweeds (on tweeds) and even throw in a couple of other trends or prints. Miuccia Prada proofed that if you keep it safe on the check color palette you can go all out on hair color (bright red), statement belts (like two of ‘em) and bright ‘n shiny shoes. Tweeds might just be your new basic/neutral.

Trend Report FW2018: Animal Instinct

If you’re a fan of animal prints, this is your time to shine. Full on, head to toe animal prints fit the current fashion trend. From Balenciaga en Dolce to Beckham and Max Mara. Forget the sand colored classic trenchcoat. Why not opt for something a little wilder?! Make your autumn outfit a roaring one covered in tiger, leopard or zebra prints. You might even match your gloves, tights, hat and bag game (as seen at Dolce & Gabbana). Oh and a pair of animalistic pumps of course, to take that walk on the wild side.

Trend Report FW2018: Pleated picture

Pleats please we said and so here they are. Adding the right touch of edge and elegance to many midi skirts and dresses. Like the Valentino red dress (worn over matching pants) at, you guessed it, Valentino. Like the gray midi skirt that Sportmax gracefully gave a sporty touch in the form of a tight top, waist belts and a pair of gloves. Like the army green colored pleated detail that was part of a extremely mixed look at Sacai. Like the pleats that gave a sheer Lanvin dress just the right little extra. And like a pink pleated Balenciaga skirt we’d love to wear every day coming fall. Keep it sporty, keep it funky, keep it fresh. And stay away from the classic pleats + blouses combination. Pleats are back (if they ever were absent) and here to give your autumn wardrobe that extra wow factor it deserves.

Mostly shown on a black canvas designers have come up with the loveliest of fall proof floral prints. From delicate wallpaper roses (Dolce & Gabbana) to a wide range of wild flowers (Gucci) and from larger than life printed on silk (Valentino) to tiny flowers on a floor sweeping dress (Giambattista Valli). Real life romantic (Michael Kors) or abstract and fierce (Saint Laurent); floral prints make up for a classic, feminine and delicate autumn ensemble. Now how bold do you like your bouquet?

Trend Report FW2018: Cape Town

Nothing says chic like a good cape. It speaks of style, status and a kind of surprise effect to it. And you can skip the Harry Potter or Medieval references right away; cape are the coolest thing again. Just look at the list of brands that revived this fashion piece. Givenchy, Saint Laurent and Missoni al proved to be supporters of the look. Thinking of joining in on the fun? Know that two roads lead to Cape Town. Either go with stiff, classic and powerful (Christophe Lemaire, Givenchy, Loewe, Nina Ricci) or opt for cosy, comfy and soft (Missoni, Isabel Marant, Erdem). For a walk in the park on a perfect autumn day. Keep it cool. Cape it!

Trend Report FW2018: Layered up/Tucked In/Wrapped up

More is more, the bigger the better, go big or go home; this trend is for everyone who either can’t decide what to wear or can’t stand the winter cold. It’s time to layer up, tuck in and wrap up. Just click through our gallery and see how the stylists backstage at Balenciage, Calvin Klein and Marni worked their layering magic. Remember the Joey from friend meme that was all over the internet right after the Balenciaga show? Well, he’s the ultimate hero for this trend. Sure you can wear a skirt with a shirt, a vest, a hoodie, a wind jacket and an oversized coat. The cold won’t get to you and if you spontaneously decide to go out you’ll at least have some clothing options. No need to show off your figure/silhouette, just let your sense of style breathe through the layers and the colors.

Trend Report SS2018: Prairie dresses

A puffy shoulder, a rounded collar with a few stodgy little buttons, proper sleeves and a neat length. They might seem a little dowdy at first sight, but fact is these throwback dresses are the hottest summer trend. Dresses (or even long skirts and loose blouses) with a fifties kind of feeling that get a modern touch by the bags, belts, sunnies and shoes worn with them. Perfect for just about any occasion; from dinners at your in laws to date nights. For the latter: just cinch your waist a bit, unbutton here and there, wear your hair down and choose the appropriate heel length. Even a dorky prairie dress can make you look extremely sexy.
