Iris van Herpen Haute Couture show Paris SS2011
This week Iris van Herpen once again amazed the international fashion crowd with another great collection. She presented her new series of twelve outfits, for the first time during the Paris Haute Couture Week.
Iris van Herpen was inspired by the increasing digitalization of the world around us. She used the sculptures of American artist Kris Kuksi as an important inspiration and used a very special printing technique for her dresses. The designs were fully printed in 3D, not a single stitch was needed. Iris developed that technique together with architect Daniel Widrig, she used this technique in her previous collections too.
The white, black, grey and beige creations were made out of unconventional material like a mix of metal and silk, burned woven metal and shiny hair threads.
And there were more collaborations… For the shoes of the show Iris worked with Rem. D Koolhaas of United Nude again and she was honored to have British hat designer Stephen Jones working on her hats. They were made out of technological bits and pieces. Remnants of computers and speakers were turned into modern hat pieces….Wow!

Dutch Model Daphne Groeneveld is the new face of Givenchy. The 16-year old Daphne is featured in the brand new ad campaign of Givenchy for spring 2011.
Mert & Marcus shot her together with albino model Stephen Thompson.
Unlike other Dutch models like Patricia van der Vliet, Mirte Maas en Melissa Tammerijn, Daphne has never walked in a Givenchy show before.
For Daphne this is her second big ad campaign. This year she was also featured in a MiuMiu campaign with three other models.

The fact that fashion shows are becoming more of a spectacle every year became especially clear in Paris. Like always Chanel’s show area was mind blowing. Also, Kenzo’s fortieth anniversary at Cirque d’Hiver was a show to remember. Then we had Viktor and Rolf with their enormous wedding dresses and beautifully illustrated backdrop. And of course there were the horses at Hermes and there was Beth Ditto’s runway début at Jean Paul Gaultier.
As for the fashion, Paris felt a bit more punky and raw (Balenciaga, Ackermann). Plus we saw many minimalistic shows like Chloé, Celine, Costume National and Stella McCartney (partly).
Lanvin
Alber Elbaz’ collection for Lanvin was everything we’d expected and more. He designed gorgeous feminine and asymmetric dresses and flowing skirts women actually want to wear. He used pleating and draping, yet made his designs very body tight too.
Givenchy
For next spring Givenchy felt rather dark, punk and techno. There was a lot of black and white, long silhouettes and sleeveless statements jackets. Tisci chose sheer and leopard printed fabrics and added lots of zippers to his creations. It all felt daring, new and very appropriate for the Givenchy girl.
Stella McCartney
Celebs like Salma Hayek, Beth Ditto, Liv Tyler and father Paul McCartney all witnessed the great show of Stella McCartney. The designer came up with a mix of minimalistic and ultra-sexy clothing. Therefore manly en feminine silhouettes alternated each other. The sober looks, as well as the fruit printed outfits (a new trend also seen at Moschino and Prada) all seemed great for next season.
Haider Ackermann
Ackermann’s fashion show ended with lots of applause from the audience and he sure deserved it. His elegant and modern collection was very impressive. There was lots of leather. Long skirts were narrow and sleeves motor-jackets looked tough. Shoulders were small and razor-shape and his signature cropped jackets often had an open back. The color-palette of black, royal reds & blues and a shot of yellow were a perfect match.
Balenciaga
Ghesquiere’s collection for Balenciaga felt very streetwise. The fact that he had scouted six models straight from the streets might have had something to do with that. Those six girls as well as Stella Tennant, Carolyn Murphy, a pregnant Miranda Kerr and Gisele Bundchen wore his pied de cock dresses in black, white, blue and red. There were colorful printed sleeves blouses, asymmetric tops and there was quilted leather. The overall look was boyish and felt very Balenciaga.

Toronto fashion Week is already half way. Joe Fresh, Attitude, Marthe Aime and Rachel Mara were the next to present their collections. As Creative Director of the Joe Fresh Style® brand, Joe Mimran is committed to offering women, men and children stylish and versatile looks for every day that are both well-designed and well-priced.
Attitude is a modern, edited collection from Sears that offers Canadian women stylish looks without the designer price tag. Basic wardrobe staples like the suit jacket, the cardigan and the trouser are anything but. The looks take a cue from modern trends without being trendy, making it easy to put together a signature look that is chic and new.
The brand Marthe Aimé was born from the desire of the designer Barbara Asei-Dantoni to rethink high-end textile accessories creating new clothing codes. Marthe Aimé is worn by a free spirit with a desire to stand out – an eye for detail and a taste for the finer things in life. The archetypal lines combine the past and present in a neo-modern classic spirit.
Rachel Mara understands modern femininity. Straddling the balance between delicate and powerful, sophisticated and flirtatious, Rachel works to show harmony within contrasts. She creates pieces that appeal to a woman whose interest lie within the tension between classic and modern.

With the beginning of Milan Fashion Week the colorblocking started too. All big Italian fashion houses were in the mood for brightness. It started off with Gucci, then Prada, Missoni and Jil Sander followed.
It also became clear that the clothes were becoming more and more comfortable. The silhouettes were elongated and looser than before, the heels less high. That is, perfect clothes to lounge in next summer.
Oh, and one other trend: fringes and tassels as details on any possible item; dresses, bags, tops, hats, shoes, skirts and jackets. Major!
Gucci
The Gucci show was a great example of colorblocking to the max. The models looked glamorous from head to toe in their colorful designs, perfect leather pieces, shiny accents and numerous items with playful tassels. Like Marc Jacobs’s show in New York Gianni opted for a seventies vibe too. Yet the outfits of the sexy Gucci ladies were a bit more body-tight.
Jil Sander
Seemed to continue the colorblocking vibe the brand had launched during it’s menswear show in June. Simons used green, pink, yellow, violet and orange in one outfit and called it ‘a mille-feuille of color’. There were a lot of stripes too. The first few looks were made of large, floor-sweeping skirts and white tees. They made the models appear larger than life, but still looked elegant. We were impressed.
Bottega Venata
No colors at Bottega Veneta, but shades of black, white and grey. The silhouette was very loose letting the body shape almost completely disappear. Items like shirt dresses and suits made gave the collection a manly touch, without becoming less elegant. A great wearable collection from look 1 to look 41.
Roberto Cavalli
At Cavalli we celebrated forty years of an amazing, glamorous fashion house. Cavalli held a great show and a just as impressive after party. His spring/summer collection, which he presented in an area full of gigantic tropical leaves, was revealing and sexy. He came up with croc and python jackets and dresses with fringes all over the place. A perfect glamazone collection with all the right Cavalli ingredients.
Prada
Colorblocking, banana & monkey prints, stripes and Mexican hats, that is Prada SS2011 in a nutshell. Miuccia herself called the collection brave, bold and obvious. And only a designer like herself would be able to pull off some of these looks. The designs were often over the top, but there’s no doubt Prada will set some new trends for summer. The show immediately became everyone’s favorite and surely was one of the highlights of Milan Fashion Week.
