Amsterdam International Fashion Week Preview: SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers FW2011

For the second time the sisters Truus and Riet Spijkers will show their SIS collection during the Amsterdam Fashion Week. Their second collection of their more affordable line will exist of 30 looks, containing 90 outfits.

‘For this fall collection we were inspired by the first female drivers and aviators back in the days. We used ladies like Amelia Earheart, the first woman to cross the ocean, as an inspiration. We were already thinking about doing something with he for a long time and now was the right time’, Truus Spijkers explained.

Truus and Riet didn’t use the theme very literally. ‘When you think of aviators you almost immediately think of lammy coats, well you’re not going to see those in our collection’, Truus said. ‘We did design knitted dresses with ribbons stitched on top of it, tough overalls and jackets with fur collars. We used shades of blue, light taupe, grey, black and some red.’

While the sea was a big theme in the latest SIS collection, this time it’s all about the sky. The twin sisters therefore designed a print of clouds that will pop up in the collection.

Truus tells the collection will definitely be a winter collection: ‘We used heavy wool, silk and cotton, yet we also did one lightweight parachute fabric.’

Her favorite items are the knitted dresses: ‘They’re comfortable and luxe, so I think many people will like them. Our musthaves for next winter must be the overall and the jumpsuit.’

Like at last year’s SIS show some video material might be shown, but the sisters can not give away too much. What they can say is that Joost van Bellen is working on some very tough rock ‘n roll music, which we’re dying to hear on Thursday evening (27 January).

Spijkers en Spijkers launches collection of glasses

This year glasses have been very popular in fashion. People, more than ever, were wearing glasses even if they didn’t need them. So it’s a smart move of designer sisters Truus and Riet Spijkers to come up with a collection of glasses this month.

On Tuesday eve they celebrated the launch of their first collection of glasses in Amsterdam. They collaborated with Specsavers to come up with 24 frames and 10 pairs of sunglasses.

Like their clothes the glasses are absolute statement pieces, each with it’s individual style and shape. And they sure looked good. Congrats on this collection Spijkers en Spijkers!

SIS by Spijkers en Spijkers Catwalk Fashion Show SS2011

After showing in London and Milan for years twin sisters Riet en Truus Spijkers are back in Amsterdam. Today they held a fashion show to present their brand new clothing line SIS.

SIS, short for sister, is the new diffusion line (and the little sister)of the fashion label Spijkers en Spijkers. ‘It’s something totally different, but the clothes still have a recognizable Spijkers en Spijkers touch’, explains Truus Spijkers. SIS is less pricy than the regular line and is more widely accessible.

The show started with a film of moving clouds, then the models appeared. They looked like the typical Spijkers en Spijkers women; long, tall, with long blond hair, like the twin sisters themselves, but with a whole new wardrobe.

The clothes of the first SIS collection were inspired by a Dutch folk song from 1774 (Daar was laatst een meisje loos) and had all kinds of maritime references. The collection told the story of a girl looking for adventure and sailing along with a captain whom she fell deeply in love with.

This story was translated through plain blue, green and white (colors of the sea) dresses with eye-catching buttons, pockets and folded boats and parrots as details on the collars of several pieces. Those were alternated by great designs with prints of sailing ships, sea horses and different types of shells in blue and white. Meanwhile Sail Away by Enya was on the speakers.

Of course with a theme like this Riet and Truus incorporated a Breton stripe in the collection. Some small black and white checked prints and several grey outfits looked great as well. Jumpsuits, jackets with tucked up sleeves and cute little shorts proved the designers stayed true to themselves with this collection.

And the best part of this story is the new SIS line will be available for prizes ranging from 85 to 350 euro.

Let’s hope Spijkers en Spijkers will continue showing this line in Amsterdam. It’s good to have you back girls!

Spijkers en Spijkers Fashion Presentation Milan FW2010

Der mittler zwischen hirn und händen muss das herz sein ! or: Without the heart, there can be no understanding between the hand and the mind. This quote, coming from Metropolis, was written on the invite for the presentation of the Spijkers & Spijkers’ fw 2010 presentation. The Dutch twin-sisters presented a collection inspired by the German sci-fi movie Metropolis, produced in the twenties and directed by Fritz Lang.

Colors (black, brown, silver, gold), graphic art, the mirrors, images of the city by night, techno-like effects and the face of the Metropolis-robot were all used in the collection. Of course the designers gave it their own twist. The result was a modern, ladylike collection with 20’s influences without being too retro.

Short, pleated skirts were mixed with sweaters, tunics in silver and bronze were combined with leggings in the same color-effect and overalls with graphic details looked almost chic with a chiffon blouse printed with skyscrapers by night.

The accessories were matching: small parts of a machines formed golden and silver necklaces and bangles, some decorated with colorful stones. It’s a pity the collection got pushed aside by the killing showschedule in Milan – it deserves the attention.
