Alexander Wang Catwalk Fashion Show New York FW2011

The collection Alexander Wang sent out yesterday was based on thick padded ponchos, quilted on the inside, that looked as if the models had pulled duvet covers over their heads. All the lush, cocoon-y outerwear was clever, with hybrids of bomber jacket-turned-poncho, boyfriend blazer-turned-fur coat, and a tuxedo jacket with puffer sleeves.

Sometimes it looked a bit exaggerated and over the top, but that’s just what Wang had in mind. He wanted to make some fun of decadence and luxury. A key element of the collection was the use of technologically advanced fabrics that combined knits and woven silk in a single piece, the result worked out beautifully. But there were more materials he used unexpectedly: everyday fleece or techno Neoprene for elegant outfits, jogging pants in luxurious pony skin; and eye goggles framed with fur. Even when the clothes were relatively classic, like bias-cut satin dresses, the skirts unraveled into ribbon streamers to give the look a twist.

Libertine Catwalk Fashion Show New York FW2011

Known for it’s sophisticated yet handcraft one-of-a-kind garments the Los Angeles based label Libertine sent out a colorful, artistic collection with painted plaid-prints on coats, blazers, dresses, tights and even gloves. The garments were pretty classic and chic – like short blazers, pencilskirts, dresses, tiny cardigans and coats – but the colors, prints and mix made it very modern and surprising. Electric blue, purple, fuchsia, yellow-green, red, orange and black were mixed together and made it into an upbeat collection.

Johnson Hartig and then partner Cindy Greene started Libertine in 2004 presenting vintage pieces with silk-screened graphics. After a few seasons of silence Hartig is back without his partner.

Jason Wu Catwalk Fashion Show New York FW2011

The army of press and photographers at the catwalkshows of Jason Wu grows every season bigger and bigger. Since Michelle Obama put the designs of this young designer in the international spotlights, his shows are one of the most anticipated of New York. This time the setting was a runway made of gilded mirrors and grandiose chandeliers in glass boxes decorating the room. And it was the perfect stage for his new fall winter collection where baroque met sportswear in a very elegant, daring way. Lace never looked so fresh.

Wu’s polished and ladylike look had a more urban vibe. The designer put a big emphasis on tailoring. He opened with a charcoal gray coat flung over the shoulders of a cropped jacket, printed blouse, and slim black slacks. Instead of an average flannel coat this one came with a strip of black lace down each sleeve. It was followed by prim, high-collared silk blouses with frilled collars and delicate bows at the closure and a virginal white dress with dainty lace overlay. For cocktail and evening Jason Wu came up with his signature tulipdresses and ravishing columndresses.

Wu made lace an integral part of this collection. Sometimes little bits of lace were embroidered onto blouses or A-line, slightly above-the-knee skirts and he engineered it to look like a print. The designer went all the baroque way by adding dense clusters of colorful stones at lace embroideries, even the hair got a gold-leaf pigment. Black and nude were the main colors, spiced up by blue, red and green.

Supertrash Catwalk Fashion Show Amsterdam FW2011

The Supertrash fashion show was one great spectacle. Since it was held in the big round Gashouder building much more people could attend the show. There were enormous queues outside and it took hours for everyone to find their seats. For the guests of the front row this was not too difficult. Girls in white tees with their names on it were holding their seats.

Around 22.15u the show finally started. A model in a light suit opened the show, followed by a classic camel coat and a pencil skirt with a floral printed blouse. The designs in beige, sand and nudes felt super feminine and made the models (with high ponytails and green eye make-up) look confident and sexy.

Jumpsuits, corsetlike tops with skirts, fur coats, leather jackets and lace dresses (inspired by the roaring 20ties and elegant 30ties) all looked beautifully made and will definitely sell well. The models wore them with eye catching gold jewelry (in the shape of the letters ‘S’ & ‘T’) and ankle boots.

After all models walked the round catwalk one more time, Olcay Gulsen appeared and there were fireworks. Then everyone gathered in the center of the room to celebrate Supertrash and Amsterdam Fasion Week.

A night to remember…

Ready to Fish by Ilja Visser Catwalk Fashion Show FW2011

Like two weeks ago during the presentation of her haute couture collection Ilja Visser again chose a special way of showing her new ready to wear collection. She chose the MC theater as the location and opted for Cirque de Burlesque as a theme for the show.

When we arrived we received fancy scroppino’s, popcorn and cotton candy and some clownesque people led us to the room where the show started. There some circus attributes (balls, swing, trampoline, ladder) were put in place for the models to pose with them.

“..So come on, escape with me
To a world where magic can be..”

Ilja designed pleated pants, tough denim shorts, capes, airy black tops and chunky knitwear (hand-knitted). There was a lot of black, combined with shades of grey, red and a graphic print. The models had large afro wigs and some red and blue details in their make-up. They looked very streetwise in their funky, young and feminine clothes.

The hair and colorful make up took some time to get ready backstage at Ready to Fish, the ready to wear-collection of Ilja Visser. Especially the braiding and curling, but the result was stunning and playful. The curly hair fitted perfectly with the theme of the collection.

Tony Cohen Catwalk Fashion Show FW2011

Tony Cohen usually shows his collections in New York. Not this season; as his show was part of the Amsterdam Fashion Week. He did bring some international allure to Amsterdam though; he hired topmodel Kim Noorda to open the show.

His collection was inspired by classic sixties couture and did indeed appear very luxurious. Tony used rich materials like silk, poly crepe and chiffon, mixed with typical winter fabrics like wool, cashmere and lambskin.

The tops and dresses all were very richly embroidered and looked very shiny. Tony also used a lot of draping and pleating in his designs. Therefore the designs didn’t look very tight.

As one of the few designers this week Tony Cohen showed some very good winter designs. Especially his coats (a black wool kimono, a nude lambskin, a pleated overcoat) looked warm and comfy.

The jewelry could have been a little more subtle, but altogether the collection looked lovely.
