Hot List: 21 Midi Skirts

We probably don’t have to tell you why skirts work so well on women. And we surely not have to explain you why it works so well in summertime. Perhaps so that the warm wind can easily blow across your bare legs and the sun is giving you plenty of vitamine D for free. Here in Holland there’s even a special day, mostly in april, tributed to skirts, as it marks the beginning of summer. But here’s a another reason why we’re talking you into a skirt: it’s one of the season’s biggest trends.

In general there’s a very strong 70s influence, while keeping a modern twist on them (of course, it’s 2015). By far the most fascinating thing to happen is the tea-length skirt, better known as the midi. The reincarnated classic is making it’s comeback on the runway and in the highstreet. For weeks the fashion pact was buzzing over the Marks&Spencer suede midi-skirt and it-girls Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo had been wearing it on their tiny hips already weeks before sale. What was all the fuzz about? It was the ultimate epitome of what spring 2015 is about: midi length(score), slit at the front (even better) and made out of suede (ding ding ding, jackpot!). The best example we can give you for this season. It feels chic, bon ton, hippy and cool at the same time and the slit makes it even easy to walk (or cycle). Plus, if you’re not ready yet for mini skirts, this one’s a good warm-up for the real hot summer days.

On the downside, the midi is a difficult one to style. Key is finding the right balance between different volumes. Don’t get to excited and keep your upper body clean and minimal, wearing a top in the same colour or fabric (denim on denim) or a simple white shirt. Scroll down and take a look at these dazzling women for some tea-length inspiration, and set the date for your own day of skirts. Let’s get cracking ladies, before summer ends.

Marc Jacobs has been one of the greatest trends setters of the past seasons. So when he introduced a whole seventies-inspired collection there was no doubt it would become a huge trend. It started on the runway but in the streets the seventies seem even more alive.

It’s all about platform heels, flared jeans (bye bye skinny jeans!), jumpsuits and maxi dresses & skirts. And preferably in a color palette ranging from nude to brown, mustard, red and purple.

Accessories like floppy hats, larger than life sunglasses, small belts and bags with fringes are the finishing touch to this hippie chic look.

Some inspiration..

Marc Jacobs Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2011

Marc Jacobs’ fashion shows have changed a lot in the last few years. They used to start 3 hours late and Monday night it appeared Marc and his crew was too early. Half an hour before the show his team Tweeted ‘Marc’s ready now. Were waiting for editors.’ Eventually the show started exactly one time, which led to Courtney Love watching only the tail end of the show.

With Vivaldi’s ‘Summer’ coming from the speakers Marc’s first models entered the catwalk. After only one look we could tell what Marc’s inspiration was. His seventies-theme was visible in every little detail.

There were easy breezy dresses, blouses and jumpsuits all, of course, in the right seventies shades (burgundy, amber, coral pink, Byzantine, bright maroon). The busy prints from that era were present too, as well as the flared pants, which we saw on a jumpsuit and a metallic pair of pants. The shorts were tiny and the slits were high. Lots of fabrics were sheer ones and the pants were high waisted.

The make-up was perfect for the show. The models had bleached eyebrows, shiny eyelids (from lots of Vaseline) and matte, stained lips. Their hair was all frizzy and often decorated by an enormous flower.

Those flowers (which were actually lily’s) popped up everywhere in the show. Around the models’ necks and waists and on the collars of their clothes. Large hats, round sunglasses en small bags and clutches completed the looks.

Marc Jacobs brought back the seventies! And he did so in a very cool and modern way. So just like the curvy collection he designed for Louis Vuitton last season this one is bound the set the trend for a whole new fashion season. (And we’re so excited!)

Ps. It was rumoured that the show area is also the backdrop of the spring/summer campaign. Marc Jacobs might have show the campaign in tandem with the show.
