You can see in every detail of Alber Elbaz’ designs for Lanvin that he loves his job, but – above all – that he loves women and that he understands their way of dealing with clothes. No difficult shapes or silhouettes, but flattering dresses, sporty & elegant jumpsuits and classy but also modern skirtsuits. His fall winter collection was inspired by tribal cultures, it was in the dark and earthy colors, the accessories, the feathers and furry details, the black hair and in the shoes.
Elbaz doesn’t dictate his clients what to wear, he suggests and gives them the freedom to add big, chunky accessories and ultra high heels. He gives them the tools, like fierce dresses with ultra-wide coat-shoulders, dresses with one arm cut-away in red and pine-green, big coats, pleated skirts and a sensual suits – the women make it their own.
Maybe that’s why the stage – a stairway to heaven – was so symbolic. Once you wear a Lanvin, it really feels like heaven.
Backstage at Lanvin Menswear fw2010
Peter Stigter went backstage at Lanvin this morning to capture the vibe. He spotted Lucas Ossendrijver – the designer of Lanvin menswear – and Alber Elbaz – creative director of Lanvin – backstage styling the models and giving interviews to journalists like Suzy Menkes (who was lyric about the collection: “Loving Lanvin has become the leitmotif of the 21st century. But there was a good reason why the menswear show Sunday was cheered so fervently. This is a rare historic house where the clothes seem to live in the moment, yet embrace a traditional masculine only culture.”)
Take a close look at the accessories – those rings and snakeskin bags ! – and the clothes. This is menswear from today – never aggressive or conservative, but self-assured and loving. And, most important: it brings back the fun in men’s fashion.

If I were a man I would wear Lanvin. The clothes are modern yet friendly, soft but tough enough and extremely normal. It’s not only the quality of the fabrics, first of all it’s the quality of design. And Lucas Ossendrijver has a great talent.
This season Lanvin looks tougher and more out-in-the-world with dark wools, raw-edge seams, some belted coats that lent a military feeling. The strappy backpack added a contemporary, city-warrior touch.
Ossendrijver went away from the too soft and poetic style, but still he was able to put emotion (a certain awareness of vulnerability) into the clothes. All this season’s trends were in the collection, done in a Lanvin-way: beautiful shoes that seem boots, the layering, the leather coats, the fluid silhouette, the grays and blacks.
Trends ss2010: goddess glamour
Next season shoulders are getting some extra attention in several different ways. We’ve seen shoulderpads, shoulder cut-outs, adorned shoulders and one-shoulder dresses.
Many designers gave their own interpretation to the one-shoulder dress. Most often they put all their creativity in the dress’s one shoulder. They gave that one shoulder lots of layers, ruffles and draping so it really stood out and made up for the missing one.
During the Iceberg fashion-show shoulders were emphasized in many ways. The colorful one-shoulder dresses seemed to be the highlight of the show. At Lanvin the shoulders got a mix of ruffles and layers.
Sonia Rykiel showed a one-shoulder dress with bows all the way to the top.The shoulder on one of Viktor & Rolf’s designs (made out of hundreds of layers of tulle) reached as high as the model’s head.
Most one-shoulder designs looked sexy, summery and a bit Roman/Greek.

Alber Elbaz treated the audience yesterday with a a bombardment of emotional and visual pleasure. His ss2010 collection for Lanvin was an overload of color, glitter, and originality: dozens of girls marching, with a furious glamour, along a runway so long it seemed to stretch into infinity. The collection was breathtaking technical: drapey, pleated jumpsuits in polyester, candy-colors like pink, salmon, peach, and vermilion, extraordinary fine leather, a buildup of encrusted gold sequins and jewelry. There are no words to sum up the powerful, slow-building impact of the vision Elbaz created. The man-made fabrics (al synthetic), the spirals of ruffles, the soft puffy coats, the plissees and the layering. His navy and mushroom jumpsuits are a whole new take on eveningdressing and a farewell to the official tuxedo. It had all the ingredients and inspiration women need to feel happy, confident and beautiful.

‘The best thing about fashion is the freedom to be’, says Albert Elbaz – creative director of Lanvin. And from this point of view the Lanvin-man can wear anything he wants, from sleeveless jackets, to shirts with a tine bow on a neckline or at the waist, kimono-cut shirts, high waisted khakis, puff sleeves or silk shorts. Lucas Ossendrijver did a wonderful job here, to mix the glamourous with the more adventurous.
