2010 has almost come to and end. But we won’t celebrate the new year until we’ve looked back on a fantastic year of fashion. We’ve collected the news on the most memorable collaborations, upcoming models and other fashion facts you must not forget. Here is our top 40 of 2010.

1. Year of the bloggers

2010 was the year of the bloggers. They were present at every big fashion show / event and some of them even reached a celebrity status. Mr. Bryanboy got to hang around at Vogue Italia for a day and recently stated he earns 75.000 Euro a year. Bloggers are here to stay!

2. Dolce & Gabbana 25 years

This year Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana celebrated their 25 years of working as fashion desigers. Domenico told The Independent they still remember their first show: ‘Our first show? We did it in a small apartment in Milan. We organized it ourselves, me and Stefano, without PR, with nothing. My sister and brother were on the door.’ 2010 also meant quite some trouble with the treasury for D&G, but their clothes are still selling big time.

3. Lara Stone is all the rage!

Lara Stone became extremely big in 2010. The Dutch model appeared on the most glamorous covers of international fashion magazines and was featured (often topless / naked) in high fashion editorials. French Vogue put her on the cover of their celebration (90 years of Vogue) issue and Karl Lagerfeld shot her for his Pirelli kalender. Lara also got married to David Walliams and stated she would like to have gay sons (?). Plus, during the British Fashion Awards Lara received the Model of the Year Award. We can’t wait to see what Lara has in store for us next year.

4. Givenchy hires uncommon models
In 2010 Givenchy was in the news twice due to it’s uncommon model choices. For it’s fall campaign the fashion brand hired transsexual model Lea T (which was later featured naked in Vogue Paris and will soon appear on Oprah). For fall Givenchy came up with a male albino model. What’s next?

5. R.I.P. Alexander McQueen

On 12 February Alexander McQueen was found dead in his home. The fashion world has been missing him ever since. Fortunately his great label will continue and has already launched two amazing collection since February 2010.

6. Mad Men Mania

Who would have thought TV-series could be such a huge inspiration for fashion designers? Mad Men become a true hype in 2010 and inspired great designers like Marc Jacobs (for Louis Vuitton), Karl Lagerfeld (for Fendi) and Miuccia Prada (for Prada) to design super feminine fifties clothing again. Don’t we all love the comeback of the accentuated breasts and hips and the flared skirts?

7. Naomi Campbell 25 years in the business

Together with Dolce & Gabbana British topmodel Naomi Campbell celebrated her 25 years in the fashion business. She also opened up on Oprah on her drug-addiction, the men she dated and her diva-behavior.

8. Burberry’s hyper modern fashion shows

Where some fashion labels are still figuring out how to live stream their show, Burberry has been quite a few steps ahead. The British Fashion house has enabled it’s clientele to shop during it’s fashion show. By simply clicking on a piece of fashion coming down the runway people could immediately order the designs and received them within a few months.

9. Spijkers en Spijkers going strong

This year Dutch designerduo Spijkers en Spijkers launched a second clothing line during the Amsterdam Fashion Week. It got a great response and we’re going to see it’s second collection within a few weeks. The two sisters also collaborated with optician Specsavers on their very own collection of fashionable glasses.

10. Yves Saint Laurent documentary

This year the documentary L’amour fou was launched on designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berger.

11. Miranda Kerr preggers

Many Victoria’s Secret angels were having babies this year. One of them is Miranda Kerr who got married to Orlando Bloom only a month after their engagement. She also posed pregnant & naked for W magazine.

12. Karl Lagerfeld as busy as ever

In September Karl Lagerfeld canceled his Karl Lagerfeld fashion show during the Paris Fashion Week stating he didn’t want to do catwalk collections for the brand anymore. Soon after that he announced his new collaboration with Macy’s. And in the meantime he shot the Pirelli calender for 2011, showing his favorite models as Greek goddesses. Never a dull moment with Karl Lagerfeld.

13. Roberto Cavalli & Kenzo: 40 years

Both Roberto Cavalli (29-09) and Kenzo (05-10) both celebrated their forty years in the fashion industry. Antonio Marras held a great tribute show in Paris in which the best of forty years of Kenzo was brought together. Tommy Hilfiger celebrated 25 years of the all American brand and Marc Jacobs’ brand turned 10. Hurray!

14. Tom Ford is back

This year Tom Ford made his long awaited comeback. And he did so in a very smart way. He hired Beyonce and Julianne Moore (among others) as models, presented his collection for a small audience and allowed nobody but Terry Richardson to take pictures. It made up for a great buzz on the collection, the models and the guests. Tom Ford also guest edited French Vogue (he put Dutch model Daphne Groeneveld on the cover) and (after A Single Man) has plans for a second movie.

15. Trend: leather for summer

Wearing leather was a big trend during the summer of 2010. With Chloe’s and Celine’s collections as inspiration leather shorts, skirts en tees were mixed and matched into our wardrobes. All of a sudden it became clear leather is no longer only reserved for winter.

16. Doutzen Kroes is having a son

Besides Miranda Kerr, Victoria’s Secret angel and ‘Dutchie’ Doutzen Kroes also has a baby on the way. She and Sunnery James (who she secretly married on a Sunday afternoon in November) are having a son in 2011.

17. LVMH & Hermes

Bernard Arnault bought 20 percent of the stocks of fashion house Hermes. Yet since the investment came as a surprise to Hermes, it seems the brand is not to happy about it.

18. Trend: Minimalism

Celine, Chloe, Stella McCartney, Jil Sander and Calvin Klein all supported one of the big trends of 2010: minimalism. Their designs were simple, but luxurious at the same time. No prints, no fuss. Just clean cuts and basic hues. Less is more.

19. New Topmodel: Daphne Groeneveld

In 2010 a new topmodel was discovered: 16-year old Daphne Groeneveld all of a sudden became incredibly successful. She started the year as one of the faces of MiuMiu’s ad campaign and ended on the cover of French Vogue. We expect this blond-haired girl with the bee-stung lips to make it to supermodel status within a year. Go Daphne!

20. Matthew Williamson’s new lines

Matthew Williamson decided to expand his business. First he announced the launch of a second, more affordable, clothing line, named Muse by Matthew Williamson. After that the designer was all over the news, because he’ll be designing a bridal collection. We’re excited!

21.   Kids collections

Both Gucci and Stella McCartney launched their kids collections this year. Gucci came up with a line for babies (0 – 2 years) and one for kids (2 -8 years) including clothes, fashion accessories, footwear, gifts and sunglasses. Jennifer Lopez and her two kids became the faces of the kids collection.
Also Stella McCartney (who gave birth to her fourth child in November) launched her children swear collection for boys and girl, aged newborn to 12 years.

22. Crystal Renn no longer plus-size

The model who became famous for her curves and even wrote a book about it, seems to be no plus-size model any longer. Crystal Renn this year shocked (well, kind of) the world by showing off a much slimmer body in Harper’s Bazaar. Though the whole fashion world had excepted her as a plus-size model Crystal said her losing wait was something that happened naturally. She started to exercise. ‘I do hiking. I do yoga, but nothing crazy, just in my house’, she said.

23. Comeback of the camel coat

The camel coat is one of the classic fashion items that made a comeback this winter. We saw them at MaxMara, Chloe, Gucci, Hermes and Michael Kors and later at H&M, ZARA and Mango. The long camel coat matches well with almost anything and therefore is a big hit on the streets.

24. AdR perfume

Our number one streetstyle icon, Anna dello Russo, has reached celebrity status. And what do you do when you’re a celeb? Exactly, you launch your own perfume. So that’s what Anna did. She gave her perfume bottle the shape of a golden heel, cause she very much identifies herself with Cinderella.

25. Rachel Zoe’s baby

After months of speculations on 17 November Rachel Zoe finally confirmed she is expecting her first child. The thin-pin celebrity stylist already spoke about baby plans on her reality serie The Rachel Zoe project and therefore it was only a matter of time before she would announce her pregnancy. Congrats RZ!

26. Double Denim

It was a fashion no-go for years, but in 2010 double denim all of a sudden was cool again. Chloe, D&G and Ralph Lauren set the trend and we hit the stores to buy ourselves a denim shirt to go with our favorite jeans.

27. Christopher Kane’s menswear

At the end of this year Christopher Kane launched his first menswear line. He came up with tees, suit jackets, leather shorts, knitted sweaters and cardigans, sold at Dover Street Market, London.

28. The Year of Phoebe Philo (head designer at Céline)

Since Phoebe Philo became the head designer at Céline, two years ago, she managed to turn the French ready to wear brand into one of the world’s most sought-after luxury labels. She has become one of the most influential movers and shakers in modern ready to wear and her approach to design has already had a huge impact on the way women dress. Celebs like Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham and Leighton Meester are a big fan of her work. And it came as no surprise Phoebe (a.k.a. the Queen of the New Minimalism) won the title Designer of the Year 2010 at the British Fashion Awards in London.

29. Alberta Ferretti & Emma Watson

The Italian designer and the British actress (who cut her hair very short this year) teamed up to design an organic clothing line.

30. Olsen Twins expand The Row

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are one of the rare examples of celebrities turned succesful designers. Their clothing lines The Row, Elizabeth and James and Olsenboye are doing pretty well and therefore the sisters are expanding. Next fall the brand will have shoes and bags too.

31. Dutch Designer: Iris van Herpen

Dutch Designer Iris van Herpen is becoming more and more popular. Though her designs are not always very wearable the fashion world loves her work. The shoes Iris designed for United Nude were featured in Vogue and Kim Kardashian walked around in them. As a proof of her talent Iris received three Dutch Fashion Awards and as a result British Vogue named her ‘One to watch’.

32. Chanel: fake fur & iceberg

For winter 2010 Karl Lagerfeld decided to make a statement. He would present a collection full of fake fur and stated that this was just as chic and glamorous. A great gesture, yet it didn’t quite match with the enormous iceberg he had imported from Sweden. In a time where global warming is one of the biggest problems it’s unbelievable Karl Lagerfeld can get away with importing icebergs. A fake iceberg to go with the fake fur would have been alright too.

33. Fench Vogue celebrates 90 years of fashion

This year French Vogue celebrated it’s ninetieth birthday. Carine Roitfeld put Lara Stone on the cover of her super thick issue and held a star studded masquerade ball to celebrate. Nobody knew she already had plans to leave the magazine at that moment…
French Vogue also launched it’s calendar, this time featuring a naked Daria Werbowy.

34. Jean Paul gaultier & La Perla

Known for his iconic cone bra and the many lingerie details he uses in his designs it was a smart move from Jean Paul Gaultier to collaborate with La Perla. This month the French designer and the Italian lingerie brand launched their first collection (with waist-cinching corsets, slips, extra high briefs and bustiers) together. JPG also teamed up with furniture brand Roche Bobois for some splendid sofas.

35. Lanvin for less

Was there ever so much talk on any H&M designer collaboration? We guess not. Lanvin for H&M was the talk of the day for over a month. First there were the leaked campaign images, then the video clips. After that, the fashion show in New York and finally the collection was actually for sale. Though the collection was a bit pricier than other collaborations every fashionista/o made sure to get her/his hands on some of the pieces.

36. Haider Ackermann quits menswear

Haider Ackermann has quit designing menswear. His menswear collection, which arrives in store in the New Year, will be his first and last – for now – the designer has revealed. Ackermann will be focusing on his womenswear collections. Or will he be preparing for the job of head designer of Chanel? Karl Lagerfeld stated that if someone would have to replace him at Chanel it would be Haider Ackermann. Quite a compliment!

37. Valentino voor Gap

After Lanvin for H&M, Valentino teamed up with Gap for a capsule collection. The seven fashion pieces were the perfect mix of Gap’s streetwise attitude and Valentino’s feminine ruffles.

38. Jason Wu bruidskleding

Since many of his friends were getting married Jason Wu decided to do a bridal collection. The five ivory looks range from traditional (a big tulle frock) to contemporary (a short, beaded shift) and are exclusively available on netaporter for one year.

39. Trend: lammy coat

The Pilot jacket was one of the big trends of this fall/winter. Started by Burberry this fashion item became an instant hit. And not only coat with lamb’s wool sold well, lammy bags, hats and boots were a success too.

40. Carine Roitfeld leaves Vogue

It came as a big shock: Carine Roitfeld leaving French Vogue. Since so many young girls dream of being an editor at Vogue at one point in their lives, it’s hard to imagine somebody wanting to leave. Yet Carine had her own reasons, one of them being she, in her heart, felt more like a freelancer. We’re curious what her plans for 2011 are.

Viktor & Rolf Catwalk Fashion Show Paris SS2011

October 2, 2010 by
Filed under Fashion, Featured Items, Paris, womenswear

Today Dutch designer-duo Viktor & Rolf presented a summer collection inspired by the plain white shirt and the striped banker shirt. Two very masculine and minimalistic items, which the designers managed to transform into a very feminine collection.

Their ‘shirt symphony’ started with several blue and white looks. They all had multiple collars and cuffs on them, each one a little bigger than the one before.

Shirt tails for a change were not hidden, but popped up from under the legs of mini shorts at the front and the back. They were extremely long, reaching to the models ankles.

The color palette changed from blue to black, orange and turquoise. Only a few stripes and a zebra print were added, letting the fantastic clothes speak for themselves.

In a few black and white as well as in some turquoise and black designs Viktor & Rolf brought stretch (= tight-fitting) jersey and voluminous shiny silk together in a way only they can do that.

For the finale they even created more volume and took the masculine/feminine theme of their show to its extreme. White bridal gowns came down the runway perfectly matching the soundtrack of the show (Billy Idol – White Wedding). Their  lace embroideries, multiple layers, cuffs and collars were a perfect ending of, yet another, great Viktor & Rolf show.

Fashion focus: all about Peter Pilotto

May 3, 2010 by
Filed under Fashion, Featured Items, London, womenswear

As London-based brand Peter Pilotto is becoming more and more popular each season, we thought it’s about time to focus on the brand and unveil it’s success formula.

Name of the brand: Peter Pilotto

Name(s ) of the designer(s): Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos

About the designers:
Peter Pilotto is half-Austrian, half-Italian. He focusses on the graphical aspects; the textile and the print. He always knew he was going to work in fashion; his parents had their own fashion store.
Christophe De Vos is half-Belgian, half-Peruvian. His approach is mainly architectural; he takes care of the silhouette and the draping.
The fact that the two designers criticise each other always takes their collections to another level.

Start of the brand: in 2007
Peter and Christophe met in 2000 whilst studying at Antwerp’s prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The label was set up in Antwerp initially but moved to London.

First collection: fall 2008

Peter Pilotto is sold in: 29 countries and has about 100 stockists

The Pilotto woman:  is a woman beyond the classification of age and style. She can wear the label with her own expressions.

Pilotto women:  Rihanna, Claudia Schiffer, Amanda Seyfried, Kate Bosworth, Michelle Obama, Jessica Alba, Sienna Miller

The clothes are: elegant, classy, wearable, chic, sophisticated, flattering, perfect for the female body.

Type of clothes: Peter Pilotto first focused on dresses but has added coats and shorts. The designers try to expand their brand with each season.

Signature: While many brands use floral prints, Peter Pilotto wanted to take it further. The brand uses prints like sunsets, fireworks, volcanoes, reptiles or reflections in the water. These prints, all originated in nature, are combined with soft sculptural shapes and elegant draping.

Remarkable: The winning formula of Peter Pilotto has worked for over several seasons. During the recession period in 2009/2010 the number of Pilotto’s stockists even doubled.

Awards:

  • Topshop New Gen Award at London Fashion Week
  • Swarovski Emerging Talent Award at British Fashion Awards
  • Pilotto was hailed by Style.com as 1 of the 10 most promising talents, after reviewing his fall collection in 2008.

What to expect: Pilotto’s digital prints and beautiful shapes are improving each season. And since Peter Pilotto was able to grew during the economic crises, the brand will certainly be successful in the future.
We will definitely keep our eyes on these two talented designers.

Streetstyle vs. Catwalk fashion

April 29, 2010 by
Filed under Fashion, London, Milan, New York, Paris, Streetwear, womenswear

Each fashion season we all get very much inspired by the collections presented on the catwalk. After New York, London, Milan and Paris we have new creative ideas and we have picked up the trends we will probably be wearing a season later. So there’s no doubt fashion designers create trends or at least a certain style.

Yet it’s also true that a big part of  fashion starts on the street. What people wear in their daily lives is a starting point for fashion too. Whether it’s your grandma walking her dog in a floral printed skirt, your father in one of his suits or your neighbour is a pair of old school jeans. Every kind of streetwear can be the beginning of a fashion trend.

During the fashion weeks our team always spots the most fashionable people outside the fashion shows. They wear clothes not everyone dares to wear. Their streetstyle is often bright-colored, crazy-shaped and remarkably printed. Not to mention their shoes and accessories.

To show you that streetwear can be an inspiration for fashion designers we selected six outfits that were seen in the streets as well as on the runway.

Anna dello Russo worked a golden dress that could just have walked out of the Gianfranco Ferre show. The lollipop pink she chose for another dress was Lindsay Lohna’s color-choice for Ungaro too. The red leopard print Dolce & Gabbana introduced, was seen on a pair of streetstyle pants. And of course the style of a tweed Chanel suit can always be seen on a chic lady somewhere in the streets.

Trends ss2010: bathing in luxury

November 24, 2009 by
Filed under Fashion, London, Milan, New York, Paris, womenswear

Of course when the spring/summercollections are presented, bathingsuits are shown. Several designers came up with some splendid beachwear. The only comment we have on these gorgeous bathing suits… they often looked too delicate to swim in. So it might be better to use them to lounge about and stroll on the beach.
The collection of Emporio Armani had a lot of beachwear. Unfortunately this was mostly black and wasn’t all that exciting.

Pucci did have several elegant beach items in its collection; some bathing suits in shades of nude and an ocean-blue version with a matching jacket.

Gucci showed us a nice grey-colored version decorated with studs.

We saw a muscular Naomi Campbell in a black & white, animalistic, one-shouldered bathing suit at  Issa. It was one of the few shows for next spring where we could see the British topmodel.

Together with the bathing suits some designers (Etro, Pucci, Issa) created airy colorful tops. Those tops are great to wear at the beach especially over a fabulous bathing suit or bikini.
