A striking sense of color fueled Derek Lam’s fall runway. From the opening look, a lavender bouclé jacket, forest green turtleneck and rich caramel calf hair skirt, he used unusual pairings of a modernist palette to invigorate his minimally driven sportswear.
The chalky pink and green necklines were powerful accents on neutral color-blocked crepe dresses, and the bright cuffs and collar of a black cashmere turtleneck gave a graphic verve to a simple sweater-and-skirt pairing. The lineup was stocked with individual pieces such as the easy dresses, cut from panels of crepe satin that were connected by gold beads, and the leathers — a mosaic patchwork skirt, for example — that underscored the collection’s attitude of sporty luxury.

Derek Lam’s collection was roughly based on a review about an exhibition focused on Sixties Californian Minimalism. It was casual and light in a Californian way, had seventies-influences (the high, wide trousers, the trench, the denim, the calf-long skirts) and looked very minimal. No frills, no ornaments, a clean silhouette, just blue denim, black and white.
Last season Lam looked to the American West for his collection of urban sportswear. For spring he went to California. In a way his collection looked still sporty, but more soft, refined and pure. Highlights were the A-line suede skirts, poplin blouses, canvas trenchcoats,, high waisted denim pants and thin cashmere sweaters.

Forties-style meeting disco seemed the overall theme of Derek Lam’s spring summer collection. Lots of color, lots of feel good, easygoing clothes. He showed a sweet little floral-blouse-high-waisted-shorts combo, a great-looking dark denim zip-front jacket, and retro swimwear in which you only lounge. Stars were everywhere. Small like polka dots on a belted dress. A bigger multicolor print was used for a sleeveless blouse tucked into corseted trousers. And then there was a sundress, patchworked together from black and white poplin with a big star front and center. It was enough to make you nostalgic for a summer by the beach.
