The fifth day of Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam brought us the impressive l’Oreal Professionel Hair Show, the poetic presentations/catwalkshows of Winde Rienstra, Dorhout Mees and Rebecca Ward plus the new fall-collection of Tony Cohen.
Winde Rienstra Fashion Week Amsterdam FW2014
Ask any Amsterdam fashion week visitor what show they’re looking forward to and chances are big “Winde Rienstra” is the answer. Those people were not disappointed tonight. While Frisian singer Nynke Laverman – dressed in Winde Rienstra – sang a song in Frisian young girls with buns high on their head on towering high wooden shoes slowly entered the runway. They looked long, lean and serene in their off white and mint colored creations. Inspired by her own roots, Fryslan, Winde, more than in her previous collections, focused on real clothing instead of just her wooden constructions for this “STJERREN OAN IT FIRMAMINT” collection. It made her looks more ‘real’ but still the designs were true pieces of art. The structured knitwear, the long sheer fabrics as well as the sparkling, sequined creations and the designs created at the Tilburg Textile Museum. Perfectly balanced, each look as impressive as the one before. And as if we didn’t have enough time to glaze at the beautiful handmade looks at the end all girls appeared once more. Standing on spinning boards the models gave us one more extra look at their attires, which shined as a flickering light in the dark, like stars in the firmament. Amen.
Esther Dorhout-Mees Fashion Week Amsterdam FW2014
Esther Dorhout Mees showed her seventh collection at Fashion Week Amsterdam. The collection ‘Passage’ consists of powerful designer pieces with organic forms in contrast with sharply hard contours. The underlying inspiration is the parallel with our human life. Mees merges apparent contradictions in a perfect symbiosis. Smooth and shiny fabrics are gracefully combined with rough textures. Even cracks in trees are reflected in the pattern pieces. The clean, straight lines of pants and tops contrast with voluminous folds and flowing dresses. In the knitwear we see this vulnerability and strength woven into each piece.

Illuminosa is the title of Jef Montes’ debut-collection at Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam. With this collection the Artez-graduate tried to visualize the effect of light in an experimental design. The tension backstage was touchable, while Jef Montes adjusted his designs at the last second.
Tony Cohen Fashion Week Amsterdam FW2014
If there’s one designer that knows how to deliver consistently it’s Tony Cohen. Tonight he presented his fall/winter collection that lived up to our expectations and managed to be surprising as well. Overall the silhouette was long, lean and asymmetric and the color palette dark; Cohen’s signature. Looks were created out of the perfect mix of textures… lots of leather, pieces of knitwear, some airy accents and silver details. A full on green ensemble looked impressive and some of the floor sweeping numbers definitely made an impact too. Pleated pants and oversized, structured blouses and long skirts with high slits looked cool and chic at the same time. Black leather gloves and filt hats added to the coolness of the looks. (filt) Hats off for Tony, for coming up with another strong and steady collection.
