In a serene and beautifully judged collection done almost entirely in shades of cream, Tomas Maier put the individualistic way we use clothes at the center of his thought process. “I think of it as a collaboration with women,” he said to style.com. “The clothes are meant to be a backdrop, a blank canvas, so the wearer can play with color and accessories to change the look and make it her own.” The concept of the neutral background came when he saw a group of children being dropped off at a karate class in Florida, where he lives: “I liked the look of the canvas, and that became my color card—white, cream, straw. And the idea of the soft belt.” Et voila, another beautiful collection was born.

BALMAIN_WBFS10_430

Balmain is the hottest label in town. For spring  Christophe Decarnin brought out another whammy of a no-brainer blockbuster: disco cavewoman goes to the front. His army of sizzling, sleek-limbed supergirls strode out with huge-shouldered, metal-epauletted military tailcoats. Their T-shirts were tattered; bullet belts were slung around artfully “destroyed,” stained, and holed jeans or, yet more sensationally, minute, hypersexed, raggedy suede and leather loincloths (the term “skirt” hardly covers it). No wonder the models had fun, these clothes were made to suit their bodies. Daria Werbowy was exclusively booked to do the show.

Esquire’s Best Dressed Man 2009

The winner of the Esquire Best Dressed Man Award 2009 is guitar player Dennis van Leeuwen.

The international jury chose Dennis because of his very own style and because his clothes stress his personality. Yet shortly after Dennis came on stage it became clear that he was not the only one responsible for his good looks. When he accepted his award he immediately gave all the credits for his clothing style to his wife Karen.  ‘Karen always tells me what to wear and gives me great advice.’

There were six nominees for the Esquire award, all with their very own style. One of them, Chris Zegers, told us he loves to wear second hand clothing. Another one, Theo Hiddema, always has his clothes handmade in a boutique in Belgium.

A third nominee, Waylon, admitted he always wears a jacket to finish every outfit.

All dressed up at the MBDFA 2009

Since it was storming outside and the red carpet was all up in the air, there were no good picture-moments during the arrival of the guests at the Mercedes Benz Dutch Fashion Awards last friday at the Grote Kerk in The Hague. So when everyone was inside and had modelled their hair and powdered their noses we took our chance and spotted some interesting guests in striking outfits.
It appeared Dutch design was well represented. While a few people wore outfits from upcoming designers, others wore clothes from well-known brands. Many women wore dresses by Klavers van Engelen, the winner of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Award 2007. The designs of Bas Kosters, one of the night’s nominees, were clearly present too.
Of course we asked everyone which nominated designer they thought should win. Although every designer was named a few times, Bas Kosters en Mada van Gaans seemed to be the favourites of the audience. Yet, unfortunately for them, the jury gets to decide who will win on this important Dutch fashion night.

And hopefully next year, we will spot men in the designs of Sjaak Hullekes, this years winner.

Fashionable Bikers

September 30, 2009 by

Due to the beautiful after summer-weather in Milan (and maybe the financial crisis) a lot of people choose the bike as their favorite tool to move from one fashionshow to the other. Dressed from head to toe in designerwear, with high heels, a short dress – there are no limits.
