Ermenegildo Zegna Catwalk Fashion Show Milan FW2012

On Saturday Ermenegildo Zegna presented it’s ‘Winter’s Tale’, a collection which combined winter, sport and town wear. It felt like a very classic collection, and this seemed to be the purpose. “We didn’t want it to shout or even look too new,” Anna Zegna (one of the family triumvirate that runs Ermenegildo Zegna) told the press.

This resulted in checked suits, turtlenecks (worn under shirts), and detailed coats. Every single piece of clothing that hit the runway was luxury to the max. The cashmere turtlenecks, the quilted leather trenches, the shearling jackets and the woolen capes (already a big trend for next fall/winter!).

A classic collection for the modern man. We’re curious to see when the first Zegna capes are popping up in the streets.

Wintertrend 2011 for him: eye-popping color

The two most common colors used in the winter collections are presumably black and grey. When it’s cold and the days are getting shorter, people tend to wear lots of dark colors.

But for this winter the designers seemed to want something else, more bright and shiny. Like we’ve seen at Acne, Burberry, Raf Simons, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, Calvin Klein and Kenzo. They used different lustrous colors to pep up their collections. The most simple basics appeared in different shades of red, orange, yellow, blue and purple. Most of them being used as a playful detail in an overall dark and gloomy ensemble, which is a perfect way to spice up your outfit. Just take a look at these cheerful looks for some inspiration…

Wintertrend 2011 for him: the turtleneck

With the winter approaching us, there’s one item that every man should have in his closet: a turtleneck. This basic item definitely keeps you warm, but still has a corny image to most people.

This season the designers showed us that this classic piece can look cool, by giving it an exciting twist, like using bright colors and prints or mixing different fabrics and textures. For instance British designer John Richmond, who let his models walk down the runway in a roll-neck revised with small fur and leather patches. And Dior gave it a cool and masculine touch, combining it with loose pants and an oversized blazer.  All these different looks emphasize the good thing about the turtleneck: you can wear it in many ways.

Wintertrend 2011 for him: sunglasses

Sunglasses: not the first thing you would think of when making your wardrobe winter proof. But you might reconsider after seeing these pictures. Because the great designers showed us that a good pair of sunglasses in the winter is not such a bad idea after all. Plus it raises your cool-factor for sure. Definitely the ones we’ve seen this season.

Like Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna, who showed us ultra cool shades in bright candy colors, gifted with their familiar touch of Italian elegance. But most popular this season are for sure the circle shades, that seem to take us back to the time John Lennon wore those famous round shaped glasses. Or what to think of an updated version of the maybe not so ‘cool’, but definitely mysterious ‘Sherlock Holmes’ shades. Not so bad of a style statement…

Streetstyle Trend Report 2011: Funky Hats

A cool hats is the perfect finishing of a trendy look. It will make heads turn in the streets and if you wear it during the international fashion weeks you will definitely get your picture taken by the fashion paparazzi. In Milan and London we spotted Olivia Palermo and Rachel Zoe sporting their signature hat looks, but we saw many more cool headpieces. Like a cap with bunny ears attached to it, a leather aviator hat and let’s not forget the leopard cherries on Anna dello Russo’s hat.

Out of all hats we spotted this season, we selected our Top 5.

Below you can find our gallery full of funky hats.

If you ask us, studs and leather are the best combination of things since macaroni and cheese. And we’re not the only ones. Leather and studs have been a big hit for decennia. You can spot them anywhere in the streets. It doesn’t even have to be fashion week.

Yet if you wanna see some true treasure examples you’ll have to go to Milan, London, Paris and New York. During the latest fashion season we’ve seen the tough trend popping up everywhere. We saw some cool examples on shoes, bags and leather jackets worn by women as well as men.

Anna dello Russo wore her studded leather Versace for H&M dress as one of the first in the world. And since that collection has just been launched, we expect the trend only to get bigger.

In bloggerland there’s even a serious trend of Do It Yourself studded fashion items. So next season we’re sure going to be seeing many more studded styles on the streets.

Conny Groenewegen is the lucky winner of the evening!! She won two awards in a row, but didn’t quite expect it. Not only the Incubator Fashion Award is going home with her, she also received the Mercedes Benz Dutch Fashion Award (the big ‘money price’ of 25.000 euro) tonight. Conny didn’t prepare a speech. “Thank you”, was basically all she could say. It’s clear Conny is better with clothes than with words. Her unique collection full of earthy tones and mixes of heavy knits and sheer fabrics blew the judges away and we’re very happy for her.

Some great news for those of you who want to get their hands on their own piece of Conny: her wedge shoes will be available at several Sacha Shoes stores from tomorrow (5 November) on.

Hyun Yeu  also won a price. He received the Dutch Fashion Incubator award which gives him the opportunity to design a collection, which will be sold in a pop-up store at the Bijenkorf (a Dutch store).

Photographer Elle Verhagen and stylist Maarten Spruyt both won a Fashion Icon Award.

Maarten Spruyt is the male Fashion Icon of 2011

Elle Verhagen is the female Fashion Icon of 2011

For now just enjoy our pictures and cheers to the winning designers of tonight: Hyun Yeu and Conny Groenewegen!

Dutch Fashion Awards 2011 (part 2)

In half an hour the very first guests will arrive and the award show can start. We already spoke to the designers backstage, who all seem to be pretty nervous. Apparently the international judges gave them a hard time during their presentations. But let’s see that as a good sign, ‘ cause those Dutch Fashion Awards are not just handed out for fun, right?

Below you can find a preview of all the collections of the five Dutch designers.

Hyun Yeu, Ado Les Scents

Korean born and raised designer Hyun Yeu is, despite his first nomination, not nervous at all today. ,,Now it’s just waiting for the moment. I’m not really worrying, it comes when it comes.“ He might seem relaxed, but the designer is definitely aware of the other opponents. ,,It’s a presteges award and there are some strong designers nominated. But we’ll see what happens.” Tonight Yeu will show us what he has made so far for his menswear label ‘Ado les scent’, five years of Hyun Yeu, and a sneekpeak of his new collection for next season. He already showed the judges. ,,I had a tough time, they had some good points. I’m still learning.” Yet despite the critics, he’s still positive about tonight. ,,I’m just enjoying the moment.”

Joline Jolink

This year it’s different. I’m feeling more confident now”, tells nominee Joline Jolink, while she’s working backstage. For the second time the designer is nominated for a Dutch Fashion Award, and she feels great. ,,I have a good businessplan and my collection has been growing.” Showing her collection in front of the judges today was still a tough moment though. ,,At that moment I was definitely shaking (laughs). They were quite harsh for me, I must admit.” Tonight Joline will show us her new collection inspired by Jane Goodall, an English antropologist, who lived in the jungle, which we can see in her collection. ,,You will see a lot of jungle details and some poppy colours and cloudy details, which stands for the haze.” After a few weeks of hard work Jolink is a bit tired of all the tension, but no worries there for tonight. ,,When the show starts I will probably get a huge energy boost.”

Marcha Hüskes

Her designs are all about functionality and fit. She designed a few little black dresses with some funky details in gold and orange. They look simple and minimalistic, yet never boring. Marcha: “I mostly designs dresses, cause I think they’re a neverending source of inspiration.”

Conny Groenewegen

Conny not only designed clothes, she came up with a fabulous collection of shoes as well. The shoes, shown on the runway tonight, will be sold at several Sacha stores in the Netherlands from the 5th of November. Quite an accomplishment, we think. Conny’s designs are, like she says, very pure. She mixed sheer fabrics with heavy materials. But enough said, it’s showtime!

Erik Frenken, Avelon

While he’s busy getting his models ready for the rehearsal, there was still time to relax and laugh for Avelons Erik Frenken. ,,I’m feeling okay now. Showing the judges was a bit of a stressful moment, I mean, they’re not just somebody.” It was a tough moment standing there, he says. ,,At that moment you have to present your collection to so many people, it’s difficult to say everything right while you’re so stressed.” But Frenken is feeling confident and is not afraid to say he might win tonight. ,,About the award, we immediately tought: let’s do this. We’re at this point that we think we can make it internationally.” And what if he wins tonight… ,,There will be a huge party!” And what about the not so bad money prize attached to it? ,, Of course we will invest in our brand. For instance the interior of our shops. And we want to find a good PR- agency to promote our business.”
