DKNY Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2017

The hoodie is having a big moment in fashion this season. And if it’s up to DKNY designer Osborne and Chow that trend is to stay around a little longer. For spring/summer the designer duo introduced a sportive ready to wear range full of activewear. Their model pack, lead by Bella Hadid, looked extremely tough in next season’s boiler suits, slouchy hoodies, DKNY branded sport bras and sheer jackets. Done in a palette of khaki, taupe and navy the items looked suitable for hitting the concrete jungle, NYC, where the all American brand, that was sold to a new company in order to start making profit again, has it roots. We’re not sure if the original DKNY costumer is up for this kind of streetwise fashion. Yet this youthful range will definitely appeal to a fresh young customer. And that might just be the key to the brand’s revival. At least Donna Karan, who sat front row at the show (with a broken foot) was all smiles.

Proenza Schouler Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2017

Vibrant and quirky, that’s probably the best way to describe Proenza Schouler’s summer collection for next year. Designers McCollough and Hernandez brought color back into their energetic line-up. Using a bunch of new handcrafting techniques they picked up from their recent visit to Paris the duo presented a youthful serie of voluminous, asymmetric skirts and dresses. Fashion pieces with graphic prints, peepholes, pleats and lots of layering. Materials were a mix of knitwear, faux fur, woven leather and ostrich feathers glued into long strips of fabric. Funky platform shoes, handbags and oversize conceptual earrings topped of the looks that appeared almost 3D. Oh and did you see the white and yellow ear make-up? Boxy tees added an extra dose of urban coolness and wearability to the very conceptual but fun spring/summer collection.

Alexander Wang Catwalk Fashion Show New York SS2017

The spring 2017 collection of Alexander Wang was delightful and young and was lightly inspired by the surfculture. Youth culture and irreverence are key tenets of his brand and this time he choose fresh material and handled it with the balance of irony, relevance and good design. t Rash guards were interpreted into slinky dresses with neon seams. A black bikini top laced around the torso was worn over a sequin skirt that wrapped like a beach towel. A cropped fluorescent-pink sweatshirt with a palm tree print bore the phrase “mind detergent.” Wang also used a cliché Eighties-Nineties thorny tattoo into a print, and gave the ultimate symbol of slacker culture — the bathrobe — a witty upscale treatment in shaved mink. Flat sandals had straps that looked like surfboard ankle leashes and necklaces looked like lifeguard whistles.
Looks like Wang caught the perfect wave this season.

Tommy Hilfiger Catwalk Fashion Show New York Spring Summer 2017

A few seasons ago the preppy all American look almost seemed to expire. But Tommy Hilfiger was smart enough to give his label a rejuvenating boost just at the right time. An update the brand could really use, instigated by collaborating with it-girls all around the world. He put TH back on the map of cool kids by letting Kendall, Hailey, Bella and Gigi walk his runway shows. And further elaborating on that, Tommy let family friend Gigi design her own collection.

That Tommy x Gigi collection is hitting the shops all around the world as we speak and was part of the TH show on Friday night too. A show for which Tommy Hilfiger invited press and friends of the brand to his very own Tommy Pier at the South Street Seaport 16 in New York. A Pier he, for the occasion, turned into an old school fair, including DJ’s, nail art, french fries, temporary tattoos, candy, rides and pop-up shops that already sold the clothing shown on the runway.

Making sure his designs were instantly available during the show was a priority to the designer. “It’s about delivering on the instant gratification that consumers are really seeking. Closing that gap between the visibility of a fashion show and the moment of purchase.” A smart move helping any cool kid that desires to strut around in oversized velvet hoodies (just like Gigi), sporty cropped sweaters, military coats and anchor printed swimming suits right away. All preppy items given an edgy Gigi touch, that will make Tommy Hilfiger and it’s iconic blue, red, white logo, as cool as it was in the nineties.

Victoria Beckham Catwalk Fashion Show New York Spring Summer 2017

Easy, relaxed, free spirited; that’s how Victoria wants herself and her women to feel and dress like. In order for them to do so she created a refreshing range of effortless clothing for spring summer 2017. Voluminous looks with a focus on the hips in which women of many sizes can feel comfortable. Far away from the glamorous looks that were once part of la Beckham’s signature. ‘I really feel I’ve come into my own this season. This is how I want to dress now. It’s looser, much more effortless, more comfortable. I wanted the clothes to look like they’d just been thrown on”, she said backstage.
And might you think velvets and boots are no match for the summer season, just click through the gallery. In shades of lilac and turquoise Victoria’s deconstructed velvet dresses looked as fresh as can be. Worn with airy knee high boots they form some odd summer attire. A daring style choice, that will undoubtedly give Victoria Beckham even more fashion credibility as a designer. Coming up with a range of bras that will do little good to most women’s breast might not be the most commercial move, but in the world of fashion it might just do the trick. Same goes for the matchy matchy shoulder bags Victoria created in the exact same fabrics as her outfits. A style choice most people would refer to as a fashion no go, but who knows Victoria might just be able to turn it into a hit. And even if it didn’t become all the rage the woman Victoria is trying to portray could probably not care less. She is relaxed and confident in any outfit.

Maison The Faux Catwalk Fashion Show New York Spring Summer 2017

Dutch fashionlabel MAISON the FAUX showed for the first time in New York, invited by MADE. Their theme: Chubby Chaser. Once again MTF showed their view on fashion by the means of a conceptual collection presentation. A strange fat worshipping ritual took place at Milk Studios. Having models continuously circling around a giant blow-up fat-tent and worshipping the ultimate “Chubby Chaser” queen. MTF likes to shake thing up. According to their pressrelease: ““CHUBBY CHASER” is a never ending desire for more, more, more. In the insanely strange world of fashion, fashion houses act as godlike institutions; telling us how to look, act and who we should be. Fashion seems to be a repeating ritual of brands overfeeding us. We are never satisfied; only ever hungry for more.”
The “Chubby Chaser” collection consists out of a number of looks restraining excessive fabric and skin. Garments with carefully proportioned excess of fabric, breast augmentation dresses and cinched waists to exaggerate the overabundance of bare skin. Mi-parti, denim, leather, recycled furs, slits, knits, silk in earthy tones of nude as well as fleshy baby pink and baby blue. To create “CHUBBY CHASER” MTF worked under the art direction of Joris Suk and Tessa de Boer together with a number of creative partners called “les Résidents”. The label is convinced that young talent and concession free designs are an important addition to the current fashion landscape.

WOMENSWEAR TREND FW2016: High Gloss

If last season was all about suede, this fall your leather should be shine. If it’s up to the likes of Lacoste, Proenza Schouler and Valentino, that is. Patent leather is all around. Wear it as a coat (like Lacoste, Isabel Marant, Proenze Schouldr, Valentino and Versace showed you) or go bold with that orange colored patent leather dress Lacoste had us fall in love with. Ether way, a shade or orange/red might be your best bet. Casual with flats (Valentino) or sensual with an elegant pump (Versace); patent leather is no longer doomed to the tacky dresscodes. High gloss for the high rollers. Let it shine!

SHOW ROOM ROOM SHOW

The handwritten, scribbled invite already gave us a big hint; Show Room Room Show wasn’t going to be just another fashion show. Nope. Camiel Fortgens, Barbara Langendijk, Karin Vlug & Lisa Konno and Schueller de Waal, six young Dutch designers were about to switch things up a bit. Away from the glitter, glamour and fast speed fashion rhythm. As we arrived at their show venue, a former monastery, on Tuesday night we were welcomed in what seemed like a large living room. Old chairs, couches, pillows and bowls filled with crisps and peanuts all around. Disposable camera’s on the floor for the audience to use. House party meets fashion presentation; an intimate set-up meant to lead to surprising meet-ups and conversations, besides just showing the new collections. And just that really happened. An aspiring styliste from Maastricht sitting next to me told me she drove five hours just to witness this fashion gathering, her first show, hoping to be surprised. Boy was she in for a treat. After Camiel Fortgens models paraded in their sand colored layered and neutral menswear looks to hip hop music, Barbara Langendijk had dancer Yevgeniia Lavrenchuck taking the stage, talking to us about purple being her favorite color and then showing us just how comfortable her body made of banana leaves was. Karin Vlug and Lisa Konno pulled a Viktor & Rolf, dressing their frizzy haired models on the runway. The girls were dressed in cool, quite sober fashion pieces, all variations to the square shirt, in white coton and denim with colorful buttons as a playful touch. Then Schueller de Waal turned the room show into an unforgettable night with his fashion sketch. He had Gaga herself (played by Merante in Wonderland) walking into the room searching some clothes in which she could look ‘normal’ again. With the help of a stylist (played by Eva Bartels) she hilariously tried several pieces on eventually leaving the room in a neon garbage dress. Fashion combined with a fun bit of (inter)acting. A brilliant ending of a warm Tuesday night in the city center. On to the next room show. We want more!

WOMENSWEAR TREND FW2016: suits

The skirt suit sure made a cute comeback last year. Yet for fall the suit is kicking back big time. We’re heading back to work in some of the most striking suits. We’re spotting long suit jackets at Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Gucci. While Sonia Rykiel and, the ultimate office attire provider, Armani are going for something shorter. And if there’s one way to summarize all suits it is by stating anything and everything is possible. Office proof in a purple velvet number including a skinny scarf (Bottega Veneta)? Or business chic in a pair of culotte pants, matching jacket and enormous velvet bow (Marc Jacobs)? Or why not skip that bow and scarf all together and opt for something way more seductive, like that grey suit jacket worn with a pair of pinstripe pants (Max Mare)? And you know in an outfit like that it’s a small step from desk to dancefloor. You’re 9 to 5 wardrobe rack just got a whole lot more versatile.
