David Laport Amsterdam Fashion Week

We had to do without for a few seasons, but Amsterdam Fashion Week is back! Updated & improved Amsterdam Fashion Week (which already exists fourteen years) is now lead by Danie Bles. It has moved from het Westergasterrein to het Museumplein (to create more visibility in the city centre) and it now forms the kick off of fashion month (followed by New York, London, Milan and Paris) taking place in September (6 – 9 September) instead of June.

The show schedule exists of twelve fashion shows, which will be livestreamed online as well as projected on the outside of the fashion venue. Twelve shows of both commercial brands (like supermarket Lidl and warehouse Hudson’s Bay) and young design talents (like Ninamounah Langestraat and David Laport). The latter kicked off this fashion week.

Inspired by dance (he previously designed a collection for the Nationale Opera & Ballet) and photography David Laport (32) came up with his brand new collection. It includes flowerlike designs; a layered dress shaped like a sprouting rose, a poppy flower inspired design with endless colorshades changing with the light and the models movement.

To the sounds of piano music (there were eight piano’s placed in the show area), written by Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck, models appeared. They gracefully sported Laport’s pleated and feathered dresses which became even more beautiful with every step and every ray of light that hit the fabric. They appeared extraordinary in vivid shades like coral pink, yellow, baby blue and turquoise.

Solange Knowless wore on of David Laports designs to the Met Gala in 2016. And we can easily see these pieces end up at a red carpet big event upcoming year.

“I don’t want my show to be just a parade of pretty dresses, a collection should really tell a story. That’s the hardest part. I can easily design something hysteric, extravagant and over the top, but I don’t want it to be just about that”, David said in a recent interview. And a perfect, serene yet mesmerizing story was told. A beautiful start of this new & improved fashion week.

Trend Report FW2018: Head Wrap

Fisherman’s caps, berets and snapbacks aside, the head wrap is taking over. In line with the thought that fashion should be comfortable and practical we’re covering up completely. Keeping our eyes on the horizon and our ears covered. Making sure we won’t get a cold (okay, forget the bare chests at Calvin Klein). Super conservative when combined with a woolen coat as seen at Chanel. Yet ultra modern styled with a body tight coat and a pair of sporty leggings at Alexander Wang. Fairytale-like at Valentino, retro inspired at Versace and modern at Balenciaga (keeping it cool while staying hot). All covered up, apart from the face. Are you ready to face the elements with these head wrap pieces?

Trend Report FW2018: Fur Real

Comfort is high up on the criteria list for fall. We want to feel warm, safe and our clothes actually need to lift us up, make us feel better, empower us almost. Our line up of statement coats fits into this category. Plus, all of them are pieces to snuggle up in, on the train on your way to work or maybe even inside while waiting for your appointment. From super hairy (Nina Ricci) to super short cut (Giambattista Valli), from almost floor sweeping (Valli again) to short ‘n sassy (Paco Rabanne). And from Sonia Rykiel’s twinning looks (incl. fur hats and boots) to Jil Sander’s floral printed robe style coat. Fake it in fur, but keep it real!

Trend Report FW2018: Eighties Leather Look

So we’re working a seventies palette, yet an eighties silhouette. Bold shoulders are back, as are the black leather jackets. The power woman silhouette came through strongly at Saint Laurent, Isabel Marant and Versace. Bare legs or a pair of skinny jeans and a bold jacket make up for the eighties look. But there’s more! Patent leather at MiuMiu, Haider Ackermann and Marc Jacobs proof you don’t have to wear color or metallic to wow your crowd. Black leather is your ultimate no brainer for fall. Oh and put on a matching hat for that extra style statement. Eighties redux with an ’18 touch.

Trend Report FW2018: Tweed

Tweed comes in every shape and size this time around. Classic, statement making, short ‘n sassy; any piece you need is out there in tweed. XL at Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein. Ladylike and old school at Altuzarra and Chanel. Youthfull and colourful at Miu Miu and Prada. No holding back this time. Wear tweeds on tweeds (on tweeds) and even throw in a couple of other trends or prints. Miuccia Prada proofed that if you keep it safe on the check color palette you can go all out on hair color (bright red), statement belts (like two of ‘em) and bright ‘n shiny shoes. Tweeds might just be your new basic/neutral.

Trend Report FW2018: Animal Instinct

If you’re a fan of animal prints, this is your time to shine. Full on, head to toe animal prints fit the current fashion trend. From Balenciaga en Dolce to Beckham and Max Mara. Forget the sand colored classic trenchcoat. Why not opt for something a little wilder?! Make your autumn outfit a roaring one covered in tiger, leopard or zebra prints. You might even match your gloves, tights, hat and bag game (as seen at Dolce & Gabbana). Oh and a pair of animalistic pumps of course, to take that walk on the wild side.

Trend Report FW2018: Pleated picture

Pleats please we said and so here they are. Adding the right touch of edge and elegance to many midi skirts and dresses. Like the Valentino red dress (worn over matching pants) at, you guessed it, Valentino. Like the gray midi skirt that Sportmax gracefully gave a sporty touch in the form of a tight top, waist belts and a pair of gloves. Like the army green colored pleated detail that was part of a extremely mixed look at Sacai. Like the pleats that gave a sheer Lanvin dress just the right little extra. And like a pink pleated Balenciaga skirt we’d love to wear every day coming fall. Keep it sporty, keep it funky, keep it fresh. And stay away from the classic pleats + blouses combination. Pleats are back (if they ever were absent) and here to give your autumn wardrobe that extra wow factor it deserves.

Trend Report FW2018: Seventies hues

Autumn comes with a proper color palette. Seventies shades paint the fall picture, so that we can all blend in with nature when leaves start falling down. From ochre yellow to tangerine, burgundy red and caramel and cinnamon brown. The ultimate brands to go shopping for atumn colors? Chloé, like you’d expect. Etro, which used those fall hues in the most dazzling mix of prints. Coach, who seemly had it’s runway covered in leaves. Louis Vuitton, where Virgil Abloh managed to give each look a sporty touch as well. And then there were those delicate, ladylike designs at Rochas done in all the right fall shades. Such an easy trend when you think about it. Cause once you’re on the right color path every piece of your wardrobe seems to match. Are you ready to fall in love with seventies shades all over again?

Trend Report FW2018: Logo a go go

This might be part 13 of the same trend report. But fact is the logomania trend is still undeniable represented. Showing off brands (and money) has been a hit for seasons now and designers are not planning on putting a hold to it any time soon. From quite subtle references at Prada to Fendi’s logo statement. And just ask Donatella how many times she can put her brands name in one outfit. Belts, scarfs, T-shirts, sweaters, cuffs and bags make for the best logo a go go items and are selling like hot cakes. And those belts might be the safest bet for all fashion lovers out there; in ten years from now they’ll still be worth just as much and look just as chic. The ultimate branded touch to a classic look (Emporio Armani) or the icing on the cake of a full on logo printed look (Versace). Lift off, takin’ my coat off. Showin’ my tattoos, I’m such a showoff.
