Amsterdam Fashion Week is all about diversity this season. The first Dutch Visionaries show sure was proof of that and the Dutch Couture & Craft presentation had a similar starting point. Supported and sponsored by a number Dutch museums it included creations of diverse visionary Dutch designers dating back to the sixties. Couture pieces by designers like Max Heijmans, Frans Molenaar, Frank Govers, Edgar Vos, Fong Leng, Ilja, Claes Iversen and a Viktor & Rolf dress from their a/w2015 collection as a finale piece worn by long and lean models who slowly walked the runway. A runway on which large white circular platforms were placed, giving the show a completely different vibe compared to the festive Dutch Visionaries celebration that kicked off the night. It felt good looking back on some of the most outstanding Dutch designs of the passed somewhat sixty years. It made us feel proud of all the heritage and talent our small country has to offer. A beautiful retrospective on the first day of the catwalk programma, now let’s move forward. On to a great fashion filled week!

And we’re in business! The official programme of Amsterdam Fashion Week’s 24th edition kicked off on Thursday night with two large overview shows. The first one, Dutch Visionaries, was an assemblage of the most diverse Dutch designs. Iconic brands that have shown their collections during previous editions of the previous Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam like Spijkers en Spijkers, Avelon, G-star, Laundry Industry, Tony Cohen, Bas Kosters and Mattijs, yet upcoming young talent as well. All of them presented three looks. No new designs, just a selection of their statement making pieces worn by dressed up models. Gender blended models with a free spirited attitude, XL wigs, bright coloured make-up and transparent plastic masks, that took the designs to a whole new (very different) level. A remarkable mix of Madonna and Diane Vreeland through the speakers, concluded by Britney Spears’ Oops I did it again. Proof that anything and everything is possible during the opening night of Amsterdam Fashion Week. A week all about the diversity of fashion in years, styles, names and visions embraced by Mercedes-Benz. Let’s go!

Trend Report FW2016: Minimum input, maximum output

While we can already smell spring’s maximalism in the air, we’re experiencing the final wave of minimalism. Less is more, so we never forget. How normcore, sober and serene ruled the fashion world for season after season. How all color seemed banned, as well as prints and chunky accessories. Max Mara, Victoria Beckham and Hugo Boss show us once more how cool keeping it clean can be. With a monochrome palette, some luxurious pieces of clothing and statement shoes/bags, that is. Nothing to distract you from the perfect modern, winter proof silhouette. Alright, perhaps a pair of the chunkiest earrings (Marni) and a big waistbelt (Fendi) then. After all it’s minimalism 7.0 we’re looking at.

Skater skirts, cashmere jumpers, perfect little blazers; Carven, Diesel, G-star and Dior are betting on some first class (literally) school girl looks this winter. Navy blue, crispy white, preppy like Hilfiger, Replay, Paul & Joe and Lacoste, yet given a little twist. Some shiny sequins and lace-up boots as seen at Giambattista Valli. Or skirt details in leather (Replay) and lace (Louis Vuitton). Becoming the teacher’s favorite just got a lot easier. Just don’t try too hard, give your look an effortless teenage touch and we bet you’ll be this year’s high school sweetheart!

Fully buttoned, worn wit a turtle neck; the female two piece doesn’t have to state the obvious sex appeal anymore. With the whole gender blending game going on even the misses can rock the ultimate tweed pants and jacket. Details like a high ponytail (Christian Dior), a red lip (Saint Laurent), an open shoe (Louis Vuitton) or small belt (Hermes) are enough to give her outfit it’s femininity. Checked (Paul & Joe), colored (Dior) or army inspired (Chloé) inspired by his wardrobe you’ll be amazed how strong of a look you can pull off. Just don’t be afraid to loose some of that in your face sexiness, have your pick from one of the above and suit yourself!

Trend Report FW2016: Lace in the hole

Fluffy jumpers, heavy coats, but underneath the lightest, most delicate pieces are hidden. Underwear is not outerwear this time of year, yet instead it’s all about the teasing game. Giving away just tiniest bit of those sexy sheer numbers. In black (see Ferretti), nude (as seen at Gucci) or bright colored (like at Balmain). There was the velvet-y lace at Givenchy and the abstract sheerness at Mugler. Transparent at the chest (more and more often worn without a bra) (Marc Jacobs) or just sheer sleeves (Carven). These designers show you how it’s done. Now who says you can’t wear lace in winter?
